Health Carousel Philippines Inc. (HCPI), in partnership with the DAISY Foundation, presented the DAISY Award given to a nursing student at the University of Baguio, Baguio City on September 5, 2023. This is the university’s 1st DAISY Award. The DAISY Award is a prestigious international award for nurses. The DAISY Foundation was formed by the family of Patrick Barnes, who died of complications from an auto-immune disease. The family was touched by the care and compassion of the nurses, which encouraged the family to develop a recognition program called DAISY, an acronym for Disease Attacking the Immune System.
There are thousands of healthcare facilities and schools in 30+ countries using the DAISY Award to recognize nurses, nursing leaders and nursing students.
Based on the standards established by the DAISY Committee, the story of Micah Turiano, a senior nursing student, gets the award.
“I dedicate this award to my family especially to my grandfather, who inspired me to take up nursing and become a nurse someday. I am ever grateful to the DAISY Foundation, Health Carousel Foundation, and the university for this opportunity. The DAISY pin will always serve as a helpful reminder to practice compassionate nursing”, said Micah Turiano.
Dean Helen Alalag presented how they promoted the DAISY Award to the students. She said two submitted their stories and she sent it to the DAISY Committee of Health Carousel.
The nominee Kathy Alalag was also given a certificate and a DAISY nominee pin.
The awarding ceremony was attended by the students and the Faculty members of the College of Nursing and the DAISY Coordinators of Health Carousel Philippines.

********The partnership of Health Carousel Philippines thru Health Carousel, LLC and DAISY foundation started in year 2020 to recognize extraordinary nurses and nursing students in the country. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Student is an ongoing project of Health Carousel Foundation to recognize nursing students. Our goal is to encourage more schools to participate in the coming years. By recognizing nursing students for the above and beyond compassion shown to patients and their families, we celebrate what it truly means to be a nurse.
